MKR:SCRN — Makerspace Digital Signage

A self-hosted digital-signage system with a scene editor, media storage, live player updates and resilient kiosk playback.

Conceptual community information display with generic scene cards, a media mosaic and clock.

Manage content and play it on a screen

MKR:SCRN combines an administration interface with a browser-based signage player. Scenes and uploaded media are managed centrally, while players rotate the configured content on kiosk displays.

The documented system is deliberately small: React and Fastify run with SQLite and local media storage rather than requiring distributed services or an external content platform.

Tools for the display workflow

  • Scene previews and a visual editor for text, images, shapes and SVG.
  • Configurable colors and bundled font choices.
  • Live change notifications to connected players.
  • Last-successful payload and media caching for interruptions.
  • Player status reporting and prioritized takeover content.

A bounded self-hosted system

The first version uses one environment-configured administrator and keeps media local to its deployment. Optional transport information relies on an adapted provider response rather than assuming a universal feed.

This overview excludes actual announcements, administrator settings and private display addresses. The featured illustration is generic community-signage artwork, not a screenshot of a live makerspace screen.
