Placeholders

A geography-based multiplayer game combining Danish places, collections and a fictional economy.

Conceptual illustration for Placeholders.

Collect places, explore Denmark

Placeholders combines a fact-based atlas with a multiplayer collecting game. Players discover settlements and landmarks, acquire fictional shares and develop a portfolio through collections, upgrades and market activity. All ownership and income are game mechanics; they grant no rights over real property, businesses or residents.

A shared world with a consistent economy

  • A map-based Danish catalog with place facts and source provenance.
  • Holdings, development tracks, collections, prestige rewards and leaderboards.
  • Voluntary listings and auctions, with economic changes handled by the server.
  • An editorial import process for reviewing geographic records before publication.

Technical approach

The application uses React and TypeScript for the interface, Fastify for the API and PostgreSQL with PostGIS for geographic records. Its documented implementation includes transactional ledger entries and automated economy tests. The repository identifies further enrichment and sustained concurrency testing as work before public launch. The featured image is a fictional miniature geography scene.
