A museum collection as creative material
ArtArt approaches open-access museum data as material for experimentation rather than simply a catalog to search. Its documented integrations bring together SMK, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art, connecting collection metadata and imagery to sensory interfaces.
The project organizes that idea into twelve modules. Each asks a different question about a collection: how its colors change over time, how a palette might sound, or how thousands of artworks can become the pieces of a new image.
Ways to explore
- A color-history spectrogram and perceptual palette matching.
- Artwork-driven ambient synthesis with the Web Audio API.
- IIIF-based mosaics and painting with color-matched artworks.
- Generative poetry assembled from artwork titles.
- Gallery browsing, monochrome studies and color-based moodboards.
Keeping the browser responsive
React, TypeScript and Vite provide the interface foundation. Instead of shipping large raw museum dumps to every browser, preparation scripts produce compact indexes for the interactive modules.
The repository includes optimized data artifacts; refreshing them from original dumps is a separate processing step. Module availability and source coverage should be assessed against the current implementation rather than inferred from a museum's entire collection.
Art, interpretation and provenance
ArtArt combines visual discovery with playful computational interpretations, including experiments with machine-generated artwork tags. Such tags are material for exploration, not authoritative descriptions of the works.
Source imagery retains its own rights and attribution requirements. The featured artwork here is an original conceptual illustration of the laboratory idea, not a museum reproduction or a screenshot of the application.
