built-how — Website Technology Inspector

A browser extension and self-hosted hub for discovering website technologies and collecting technology profiles in one searchable workspace.

Conceptual magnifying lens revealing layered web technology blocks and connected catalog cards.

See the technology behind a website

built-how combines a website technology inspector with a shared catalog of its findings. A Chrome extension examines the site being visited, while a self-hosted backend supplies complementary information and accepts authenticated synchronization.

The aim is to make discoveries useful beyond a single browser session. Technology profiles can accumulate across personal devices or a team and become a resource to browse rather than a succession of isolated detection results.

Three connected parts

  • A Manifest V3 Chrome extension with popup and side-panel interfaces.
  • A Fastify backend for DNS resolution, TLS inspection and server-header analysis.
  • A React web dashboard for exploring collected website profiles.
  • Shared TypeScript definitions, schemas and detection rules.

From inspection to a shared catalog

The extension's documented scope includes frameworks, content management systems, analytics, servers, CDNs and infrastructure indicators. The backend adds observations that do not depend solely on the page's visible frontend.

Detection results are observations rather than a guarantee of a website's complete internal architecture. The useful workflow is to inspect the available evidence and compare profiles, particularly when several technologies leave overlapping traces.

Self-hosting and development

The repository is organized as a monorepo with separate extension, backend and dashboard applications. Docker Compose packages the backend and web application, while npm workspace commands support development and builds.

Synchronization requires deployment-specific authentication. No actual sync credentials, private hostnames or internal endpoints are included here. The featured artwork illustrates layered technology discovery and is not a screenshot of an inspected website.

Project notes

This overview was prepared from a private project repository reviewed on October 29, 2026. Source access remains private; credentials, internal endpoints and confidential implementation details are not included.
